Thirty years ago on July 4th 1986, my mom immigrated to the United States with only $250 and a one-way ticket to Guam. Today, on July 4th 2016, Mele and I will be traveling through the Philippines for three weeks with only what we have on our backs (38L Gregory backpacks). There's something fascinating about taking what little we think we'll need for the journey, yet knowing the abundance of what lies at the destination.
