Proposals are immensely special moments for many couples. When Jonathan invited me to shoot his in San Francisco, I was a bit apprehensive for fear of missing the right shots or my lens being out of focus. Plus, I’d never done a photoshoot proposal before!
Thankfully, he arrived in town a few days before so we managed to scope out the shoot location*. Among the contenders were Kirby’s cove (ruled out because I’d never been), Baker Beach (axed because the sand would be annoying), and Torpedo Wharf. I’d just done a graduation photoshoot there the week before, and he for sure wanted the bridge in the shots.
Since I’d never met Katelin (yet!), the plan was to be a tourist and take candid photos of the proposal with the Golden Gate Bridge as a backdrop.
*Fun fact: This is what Torpedo Wharf looked like when we initially scoped out the shoot location. Because it was going to be similar weather on the intended proposal date, Jonathan had to change plans. Katelin was flying in from Korea and her family was in on the plans, so he had to convince Katelin’s parents to get her to go to San Francisco on Sunday instead of Monday.
Long story short, Jonathan pulled off an elaborate plan after months of planning. I’ve known Jonathan for over five years since we met through my sister in Sasebo, Japan. We’ve hung out all around the world, and I truly consider him a close friend of mine.
In all the years of knowing him, he’s been a genuinely down-to-earth, honest, and happy person. Meeting Katelin for the first time and watching them glow together will be a moment to remember for a lifetime.
